Adriano Pupilli Architects respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land on which we live and work; the Gayamaygal people and Yuin people. We pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging. This is, was and always will be Aboriginal land.

Casa De Baso Collaroy

Reviving a classic

Interiors, Residential

This 1950s Northern Beaches home, once burdened by a series of poorly conceived renovations, has been thoughtfully revitalized to serve as a light-filled, generous space for a growing family of five. The project focused on breathing new life into the residence by opening up the living areas, making the home both functional and inviting.

With a tight budget in mind, we decided to retain most of the original external structure and concentrate our efforts on reworking the interiors and the rear of the house. These areas had suffered the most from the ad hoc renovations carried out over the past 60 years, resulting in a confusing layout that isolated the rear of the house from the north-facing garden.

To address these challenges, the design centred around creating an open-plan living space with the kitchen serving as the heart of the home. This central hub connects the dining area to the rear garden and the living space to the front, fostering a sense of flow and connectivity throughout the house. A varied ceiling height was introduced, adding a sense of rhythm and drama to the space, culminating in a vaulted ceiling with a skylight above the dining area. This feature acts as a sundial of sorts, tracking light as it shifts throughout the day and the seasons. Finally, a large set of timber sliding doors was installed to provide visual connection to the garden, further integrating the indoor and outdoor spaces.

This renovation demonstrates how thoughtful design can completely transform a home, even when working within the constraints of an existing structure and a modest budget. The result is a revitalized space that feels both expansive and intimately connected to its surroundings.

"Adriano and the team at APA were incredible to deal with. From their initial design concept right through to the finished product.
We were blown away by Adriano's vision, we had no idea what could become of our awkwardly built house. Adriano and Matt turned what was a rabbit warren, with many corridors and doors that lead to absolutely nowhere, into a light filled oasis with loads of space for our family to enjoy.

What they achieved, working within a strict budget and within the existing shell of our house was very impressive. Challenges were faced head on and overcome with creative solutions.
They answered every question, and there were many, and guided us through with ease. It was an absolute pleasure working with them and we felt safe and supported through the entire process.
Could not recommend the team at APA more, nor give them higher praise."
