Courtyard House Petersham

Transforming a tiny terrace

Interiors, Residential

In this transformation of a tiny terrace in Petersham, our focus was on remodelling the rear to create a new kitchen, bathroom, and living space, thoughtfully separated by an internal courtyard. The project aims to future-proof the home for comfortable, single-level living, while addressing issues such as excessive dampness, inadequate natural light, poor air movement, and limited garden access.

The narrow 4-meter-wide site presented challenges, compounded by a tall neighbouring house, rising damp, failing foundations, termite damage, and internal stormwater drainage problems—all to be remedied with a modest budget. To tackle these constraints, the rear masonry was selectively demolished and re-supported with steel posts to address the damp and subfloor issues. This intervention also facilitated the removal of internal walls and the insertion of glazing around the new courtyard, which brought in much-needed light, air, and canopy views to completely transform the kitchen space.

The courtyard replaced an old laundry area, which was relocated beneath the existing staircase. A breakfast bench was positioned opposite the kitchen, facing a second internal courtyard to enhance the connection to the outdoors. The central circulation spine now functions as additional kitchen space, optimizing the layout.

At the rear, a new living space was created under a skillion roof with highlight louvre glazing, set back from the boundary to maximize daylight and ventilation. Timber sliding doors open the living area seamlessly to the garden, creating a green oasis on both sides. Additionally, roofettes in the courtyard provide playful spots for the owner’s cats.

Overall, this project is an example of how clever design and resourceful use of space can resolve a home’s issues while also transforming it into a healthy, light-filled space to enjoy for many years to come.

"From the beginning I was impressed with his vision and creativity as well as being very approachable and easy to work with.
The solutions he came up with – a new internal courtyard and a spectacular roofline letting in the northern light – were quite visionary."
