Layered House
Retaining, adapting, creating something new
Interiors, Residential

The approach was for a light touch to increasing space for the family as the kids grow older, working within a tight budget and a desire to maintain the rich character of the heritage home. The approach to adaptively re-use of the previous rear extension was selected as it conserves finite materials, minimises waste and maximises the budget. A low-set new upper level, clad in dark stained timber, allows it to recede behind the heritage home and complement the two diverse pre-existing stylistic languages.
The new upper level adds a master bedroom, secondary living space, bathroom, office, hallway library and attic room. Two apertures protrude from the rear elevation and angle towards distant views of Canada Bay. An existing pergola structure is converted to a green roof to filter views of neighbours and create a calm and private outlook from the new upper level.

Inside, however, the space feels expansive — with soaring ceilings, striking angles and curves, and a dramatic void that adds architectural interest. Adriano and his team skillfully brought natural light into the centre of the home and framed views in a way that enhances both comfort and aesthetics.
Their recommendations for flooring, tiles, and lighting were not only within budget but also instrumental in creating a cohesive and beautifully integrated upper level that blends seamlessly with the original house.
I couldn’t be happier with the final result!
