Maroubra Surf Life Saving Club
Anchored in Community
Public

The building is conceived as an object-in-the-round, engaging all four frontages in response to its coastal context. A robust face brick base in warm sandy tones anchors the building, sculpted to define entries, create sheltered thresholds and activate edges that interface with surrounding public space. Above, a setback upper volume clad in fibre cement acts as a protective shell, with generous eaves and glazing blurring the boundary between inside and out.
At the centre, an east–west circulation spine serves as an organising element and an internal street, introducing porosity, connecting key program elements and the eastern forecourt with the western plaza. It also functions as a memorabilia gallery, celebrating the club’s history and achievements.
Operational spaces are clustered to the south, including an expanded equipment store and patrol hub. Above, a combined training room and member’s lounge flow onto an elevated observation deck, connected by an external stair that fosters a broader sense of welcome during club events.
Club and community functions occupy the northern edge, including club changerooms, gym, barista window and outdoor showers, activating an existing picnic shelter and reserve to the north. A function space above captures expansive views across Maroubra Beach, with terraces extending the function space into the outdoors.
Sustainability measures including photovoltaic panels, solar hot water, rainwater harvesting and extensive native planting, embed the building within its coastal environment, while establishing an enduring clubhouse that will serve future generations of volunteer surf life savers and the broader community.
